Bay Microsystems Delivers 10 Gb/s Internetworking Processor Developed With Avant!'s SinglePass-SoC Solution

Avant!'s SinglePass-SoC Solution Delivers Design Closure for High-Speed and Large-Bandwidth SoC Design

FREMONT, Calif., May 6, 2002 - Bay Microsystems, Inc., a privately held, fabless communication IC company, recently announced First Customer Ship (FCS) of its "right first time" 10 Gigabit per second Montego Internetworking Processor using Avant!’s SinglePass-SoC™ high productivity design automation solution. This ultra-high performance packet processing device was implemented using 0.18-micron semiconductor process technology and completed in record time. The fast design closure and sign-off for manufacturing was achieved with the highly integrated and very productive automated design solution operating on the production proven database, Milkyway™.

Bay Microsystems has created a new class of network processor that combines scalability, intelligence processing and ultra-high performance in highly integrated single chip solutions. With the release of their deterministic pipelined, super-scalar architecture, Bay has broken through the industry barriers, with a comprehensive single chip solution addressing carrier class applications that scale from "Access to Long Haul".

"Montego represents the state of the art in system-on-chip design and as such only a complete custom design flow was ever considered as an option," said Tony Chiang, vice president of engineering at Bay Microsystems. "Our design philosophy requires that we use advanced, stable and 'silicon proven' tools that allow us to predict and control all aspects of the design through to and including the back-end. Avant! met all of these requirements while providing us tremendous support throughout the entire design process."

"Bay Microsystems' success with our SinglePass-SoC solution is a very strong endorsement of our leading technology solutions that truly add value and provide results that enable early stage companies to achieve their goals and satisfy their investors," said Dr. Paul Lo, president of Avant! Corporation. Dr. Lo continued, "We look forward to a long, mutually rewarding partnership with Bay by providing our customers with the best technologies so that they can continue to succeed."

SinglePass-SoC is Avant!'s proprietary RTL to Silicon flow that delivers the fastest time-to-market for differentiated silicon at ultra-deep submicron (UDSM) process geometries. The Milkyway-based, SinglePass-SoC flow has achieved tremendous momentum and significant support from all customers, worldwide foundries and major ASIC vendors. SinglePass-SoC ensures rapid convergence of key design parameters, such as timing, area, power, clock, and noise, while providing accurate UDSM silicon modeling for signal integrity and voltage drop, full chip analysis and optimization capabilities for electro-migration, reliability and manufacturability, to generate silicon, differentiated in terms of improved performance, density, and yield.

About Bay Microsystems' Design and Design Flow

Creating a device that sets the standard in networking for functional integration and performance is a significant challenge. The Bay team leveraged Avant!'s full suite of tools including Nova™, Jupiter™, Apollo-II™/Saturn™, Star-RC™, Mars-Rail™, and Hspice® in order to quickly and efficiently tape-out the multi-million gate Montego. The complexity of the design was not lost on the Bay team either as they were faced with numerous hurdles including over 2000 flip chip bumps, complex power routing schemes, very high speed / wide buses, with a combination of over 20 digital and analog sub-modules and nearly 100 internal memory blocks. Bay Microsystems was thrilled to successfully meet these steep challenges in record time.

About Bay Microsystems

Bay Microsystems Inc. is a privately held, fabless communication IC company. Bay's Internetworking Processor (InP) Family™ of programmable packet processing devices combines scalability, intelligence processing and ultra-high performance in highly integrated solutions. These devices are ideally suited to scale from "Access to Long Haul" for carrier class products such as access concentrators, voice, wireless and xDSL gateways, multi-service switches and routers, cable head ends and intelligent optical (DWDM, Sonet) transport equipment, deployed within the metro-edge, metro-core, regional and long-haul markets. The InP Family includes the industry's first single chip OC192c/10G Network Processor/Traffic Manager with switching.

Bay's highly experienced management and world-class engineering team have three generations of proven expertise in architecture, implementation, deployment, marketing and management of network processors.
